The Terrible Truth About Awful Data

Attention, attention. This is important.

I am some very good, very exciting news. And I’d like to introduce this wonderful news by telling you about a terrible problem I didn’t know existed.

A little more than a week ago, a Sloper wrote me, puzzling over a few of the earnings dates on the site. He showed me, one by one, how some of our earnings dates didn’t match with what the company itself was reporting. It was a polite, well-researched email, and he was absolutely correct.

Cones and Dots

I wanted to show how a couple of SlopeCharts features can be used together to helpful effect: first, the Price Cone, and second, Option Dots. I’ve used them in the chart below with high-flying stock Tesla. The price cone illustrates the options market’s assessment as to likely price movement in the next 30 days (an enormous range, for obvious reasons) whereas the option dots show the various put and call options available at different price points.

Volatility Raw

For a number of months now, SlopeCharts users (who are Diamond members) have had access to the IV Rank study, which provides four different “flavors” of IV Rank, which is very useful for options traders. I wanted to let you know that we have also added something new, “Basic IV”, which is just what it says: the simple, raw volatility chart without any of the calculations that result in the IV Rank data.
