Loma Prieta Memories

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. I thought I would share my story of that day here.

On October 17, 1989, life was going pretty well for me. I was engaged to be married, and I had a good-paying job at Apple, working in a group we had concocted called Worldwide Channel Systems. Although we didn’t know it at the time, we were basically plotting out the strategy for what would later be possible via the commercial Internet, but we were, regrettably, about six years too early.

WSB Lunacy

I have mentioned the sub-reddit Wall Street Bets (WSB) quite a few times here on Slope. For those of you unacquainted with it, it’s basically packed with degenerate gamblers, largely in their 20s, who get fixated on the stories from the sprinkling of extremely profitable options traders in there and, for their own accounts, lose most of their money. I went over there just now for an example, and it took me about three seconds to find one:

Dream a Little Stream of Me

For those of you who use Tradier as their broker, I have some interesting news. For those who don’t, this is still relevant, but for different reasons.

We have been taking steps to integrate brokerage information into Slope on a steady basis. We are slowly moving from feature to feature, and broker to broker. My ultimate goal is an end-to-end strategy and trading platform right here on Slope.

Neutral Position, Neutral Mind

I wanted to share a few thoughts about my “tilt” toward market-neutral options trading. This has been a long time coming, and I might as well explain myself.

It’s not for lack of other people trying. Dutch and The Director have been trying to convince me to experiment with various options strategies since Lyndon Johnson was in the White House, and many Slopers have been pinging me to try to learn something other than shorting anything with a ticker symbol that fell into my line of sight. I ignored them all. Until now.
