Happy Boxing Day, everyone! The equity markets are absolutely thrilling pre-market: the S&P 500 futures are up 0.01%, for example. Actually, the only real action is in the world of precious metals, as the debasement trade continues to thrive. What has happened over the past couple of years is jaw-dropping, and like I keep saying, this isn’t happening for no reason. There are fundamental changes taking places that I think won’t be clear until years in the future:
This evening, palladium briefly sold off hard, then just as suddenly, it rocketed higher. As of this moment, it’s up almost $100 per ounce and over 5%, extending what has been a sensational run in my best chart call of the year.
One of the hottest sectors right now is anything to do with space and satellites. Think of it as an expression of the frustration people have that SpaceX isn’t public (but purportedly will be next year). Below is an ETF that covers that rocket-related outfits as well as three of its more interesting components.
I have been enthusiastic about precious metals for years. There are a couple of reasons why I was able to defy my own instincts to just short everything in sight and make a special exception for precious metals:
I just randomly jumped back a couple of years to offer up a tidbit of evidence that I loved precious before loving precious was cool, and I found one not very subtly titled Go Go Gold in which I state how bullish GDX and GDXJ look. They’re up about 250% since then. Not bad!
